Photographing Children // Jessica Salort Photography

Photographing small children is probably one of the most fun types of sessions I do. There is no session quite alike with the amount of adventure they bring. Each child is unique and has the photographer continuously thinking of their next move. You should see me dancing about and running in circles trying to catch their cuteness.

I wanted to share with you what I look for in children's photography and how I photograph to get the most out of my sessions.

1. I look for a connection. - Kids are emotional beings. They love with all their heart. Whether it's mom, dad, their stuffy, or a pup, they will show it, and when they do, it's beautiful.

2. It's all about the Eyes. - The say your eyes are the windows to your soul. You can tell so much from someone through their eyes, so I like to get real close. I love the little details of the face, but the eyes always get me.

3. Big Giant Laughs - I love a good laugh, especially when you could feel it in your belly. Then tilt your head back, mouth wide open smile. Those are the most genuine reflections of childhood, pure happiness.

4. Profile photos - Long ago, I started realizing how much I adore profile photos. Much like the taking measurements, I love how you get another dimension of your child's growth.

5. I let them explore their ideas of photography.- Of course, you want perfectly posed photos, but you forget how much you will miss those funny faces. They grow too fast parents, so let's make this fun for them. What better way to use your creativity?

6. A little dirt never hurt in my book.- Can you get really into the fun without a bit of dirt on your clothes without stressing about these fancy clothes you got on? Don't worry, I won't start with the messy stuff, but if it happens, we will make the most out of it. Let them relax and enjoy their surroundings. This magical world is beautiful.

7. I am all about the angles.- I want to see what children are looking at. How they view the world and how their imagination lives there. Don't be surprised when you see me up on a ladder or lying flat on the floor.
